Upbound is gearing up for all things KubeCon next week here in our hometown, Seattle. We welcome you to our city to celebrate Kubernetes and discuss the future of cloud native technologies. We’re excited to talk with you about our latest open source project, Crossplane, the multicloud control plane, as well as Rook, cloud native storage orchestration for Kubernetes.
Join us at one of our talks or go by the Rook booth, booth S40, to talk with us in-person. Or if you would like to celebrate with us on Monday to kick-off KubeCon we are hosting a speakeasy from 7:30 to midnight and you’re invited. And if you’d like to arrange a meeting with us reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org to get something scheduled.
Cloud Native Storage Day - Monday, December 10
On Monday December 10th, 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, Cloud Native Storage Day , co-located at KubeCon, will take place. Upbound will be speaking throughout the day.
10:10am - Intro to Container Storage
Jared Watts, Founding Engineer at Upbound and Rook Senior Maintainer, will join Alex Chricop, founder and CTO of StorageOS, to introduce the key terminology and concepts of storage within the cloud native landscape, providing attendees with the fundamental knowledge to understand the options and trade-offs of persistent storage in Kubernetes from a practical perspective.
10:50 am - Stateful Containers in Production
Our very own Jared Watts will moderate a panel with with Paul Davis, Comcast, Dmitry Mishin, San Diego Supercomputer Center, and Niraj Tolia, Kasten to have an interactive conversation
About ongoing operations and management of stateful applications and their underlying infrastructure. The speakers will introduce vital considerations and strategies for handling "Day 2" operations of stateful applications successfully.
3:30 pm - The Next Big Thing: Running apps on Kubernetes in a Multi-cloud/Multi-cluster environment
Bassam Tabbara, CEO of Upbound, will sit on a panel with Erin Boyd of Red Hat and Chakri Nelluri of Diamanti to talk about managing replication across cloud/on-premises sites for both operational efficiency and DR prep.
Upbound Speakeasy Party - Monday, December 10 at 7:30 pm
Come unwind with us on opening night! RSVP for tickets to join us for some bootleg inspired cocktails and bites.
Music will be provided by Darek Mazzone, international DJ & Host of KEXP'S Modern Global show Wo'Pop.
KubeCon Day One Talks Tuesday, December 11
Since we launched Crossplane, we have heard from the community that you want to hear and see more in person. Be sure to go by Illya Chekrygin’s talk at 11:40 am on the first day of KubeCon to learn more. And end your day with an Introduction to Rook from Jared Watts.
11:40 am - Clusters as Cattle - Wrangling Clusters Not Just Nodes
Location: Ballroom 6B
Kubernetes has fulfilled its promise at wrangling nodes and providing a self-healing, self-scaling, self-everything experience. Nodes can come and go and be automatically scaled using node scalers. But what if node scaling is not enough, and you need to scale clusters too? What if you want to separate types of workloads across different clusters for performance, isolation, geographic distribution, compliance or management reasons?
Behold, the future is here! In this talk, we’ll explore how Kubernetes can automatically deploy and manage other clusters dynamically and on as needed basis. We’ll show a demo of an application that is able to dynamically provision clusters across regions and schedule workloads across them. We’ll explore the benefits and challenges of this approach.
4:30 pm - Intro: Rook
Location: 2 A/B
In this talk, we will be introducing the Rook project to attendees of all levels and experience. Rook is an open source cloud-native storage orchestrator for Kubernetes, providing the platform, framework, and support for a diverse set of storage solutions to natively integrate with cloud-native environments. Rook turns storage software into self-managing, self-scaling, and self-healing storage services. It does this by automating deployment, bootstrapping, configuration, provisioning, scaling, upgrading, migration, disaster recovery, monitoring, and resource management. We will explore the benefits and use cases of Rook, and we will also walk through the architecture that the project is built on. Rook was accepted as the first storage project hosted by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) in January 2018.
End KubeCon with a Rook Talk - Thursday, December 13
End your KubeCon on a high note with Jared talking about how new storage providers can take advantage of the Rook framework to easily and reliably run on Kubernetes.
4:30 pm - Adding a New Storage Provider to Rook
The CNCF hosted Rook project has built a framework for running stateful workloads on Kubernetes, enabling storage providers to seamlessly and effectively integrate into cloud native environments. This framework is already being used to support multiple storage providers such as Ceph, CockroachDB, Minio and NFS.
In this talk, Jared will walk through how new storage providers can also take advantage of this framework to easily and reliably run on Kubernetes. He will also cover the benefits that Rook provides to make this transition to cloud native environments easier for new storage providers. Finally, the important architecture, design, and concepts for running storage solutions on Kubernetes will be explored in detail.
Our Favorite Seattle Establishments
While we know you will likely spend a majority of time at KubeCon we want to share some of our favorite places nearby. As locals we know Seattle like the back of our hand and hope you enjoy the place we call home. Bassam Tabbara, CEO of Upbound, loves a coffee from Espresso Vivace.
If you are looking for a tasty restaurant, hip bar, or delicious coffee, Seattle has many great neighborhoods just a Lyft ride away. The Pike/Pine corridor on Capitol Hill is full of nightlife and is just a 10 minute walk from the convention center. I recommend paging through the Stranger's Know It All Guide to Seattle to plan your destination.
Again, we hope to meet you while we are at KubeCon. Please do reach out if you are interested in learning more about Crossplane, Rook or working with us. Email us at email@example.com to set up time.
